Specific concentration limit (SCL)

InnovaDocs SDS teamUpdated: 6 November 2026

Definition: A specific concentration limit is a substance-specific threshold under CLP Article 10 that replaces the generic cut-off when deciding whether a mixture is classified.

Example: a substance with an SCL of Skin Irrit. 2; H315: C ≥ 20 % only makes a mixture irritant from 20 %, not from the generic 10 %. SCLs can also be lower than the generic limit.

For additive classes such as skin and eye effects, ingredients with SCLs are combined with the formula Σ(Ci / SCLi) ≥ 1.
