Exposure scenario (extended SDS)

InnovaDocs SDS teamUpdated: 6 November 2026

Definition: An exposure scenario describes the operational conditions and risk management measures for the safe use of a registered substance, and is annexed to the SDS as an extended SDS (eSDS).

Exposure scenarios are required for hazardous substances registered at 10 tonnes or more per year that need a chemical safety report.

Formulators must check that their use is covered and pass relevant information on in their own SDS, either in the main sections or as an annex.

Legal anchor: the 10 tonnes per year threshold triggers the chemical safety report (REACH Article 14); the exposure scenario is part of it. Downstream user duties: Articles 31(7) and 37(4).
