SVHC (Candidate List)

InnovaDocs SDS teamUpdated: 6 November 2026

Definition: An SVHC is a substance of very high concern identified under REACH Article 57 and published on ECHA's Candidate List, as a first step towards authorisation.

CMRs, PBTs, vPvBs and substances of equivalent concern such as endocrine disruptors can be SVHCs. The list is updated twice a year.

Suppliers of articles with more than 0.1 % SVHC must inform customers, and mixtures with 0.1 % or more of an SVHC need an SDS on request. The SVHC is named in SDS sections 3 and 15.

Legal anchor: REACH Article 59 (Candidate List procedure). Article 33 applies to articles with more than 0.1% w/w: recipients must be informed, consumers on request within 45 days. Since 2021 such articles must also be notified to the ECHA SCIP database (Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC, Article 9(1)(i)). For mixtures, SVHCs are reported in SDS Sections 3 and 15, not under Article 33.
